Store Magleby Church
4. July 2025The organ was restored in 2024-2025 by Marcussen & Søn, including restoration of the original disposition (with the addition of new pipes for pedal voice Subbas 16 F). The organ has 12 stops + 4 transmissions (originally 11 voices + 4 transmissions), divided into great, swell and pedal.
Hornslet Church's organ was built in 1873 by Daniel Köhne for the Copenhagen Inner Mission and installed in 1882 in the Bethesda Mission House. In 1899, the organ was donated to Hornslet Church.
The swell is a later addition and may have been added in 1882, when the organ was installed in the Bethesda Mission House. Rebuilt around 1960 by J. A. Zachariasen, Aarhus.
Restoration begun by the same artist c. 1960; not completed. Restored in 1968 and 1988 by Marcussen & Son.

The organ has been restored, including renovation of the console, key and stop actions, as well as inspection of the wind chests, including transmission valves, and various reconstructions of pipeboards. The wind system has been renewed, with a new blower, bellows and roller valve, located behind the organ. The new bellows system replaces the regulating bellows, which were placed inside the organ. Various flex ducts have been replaced by fixed ducts.
The restoration was carried out with support from the Johan Otto Wroblewski Foundation.
Bordun 16 F wooden pipes have been moved down and extended to their original pitch. They have been placed in their original position, on the great/pedal windchest, and the transmission between HV-P has been restored. Treble in Bordun 16' is made with old metal pipes from (formerly Oksenvad Church, 1890 Marcussen & Søn).
Quint 2 2/3 F has been restored by extending old pipes, including restoration of expression tuning slides. Two pipes have been reconstructed.
Superoctav 2 F has been restored, with reuse of the 2' C-A of the swell. Other pipes have been reconstructed (3) or supplemented with old pipes (formerly Hoptrup Church, 1872 Marcussen & Søn).
Trumpet 8 F is reconstructed after the corresponding stop in Sakskøbing Church's organ, with lead heads and metal boots.
Fugara 8 F from c0 is reconstructed after the scale in Sakskøbing Church's organ, with expressions. Original transmission C-H with Gedakt 8 is restored.
Subbas 16 F. In the original layout, there was no Subbas with independent pipes. There are 27 new pipes made of pine, copied from Subbas 16 F in Sakskøbing Church. The pipes are connected to an existing pedal palletbox (1968). The scale of the Subbass is 7 semitones larger than the Bordun in Hornslet.

Excerpt from a statement written by the Ministry of Church Affairs' organ consultant Torben Krebs in connection with the restoration's approval on 11 March 2025:
The two string stops - Salicional 8 F (Hv) and Fugara 8 F (Sv) [Fugara is reconstructed] - have significant differences in character and a good ability to blend. The former blends beautifully with e.g. Principal 8 F and also has enough character and volume in itself to function as a solo stop. The latter is mild and sweet, yet has the character and fullness to form the ‘backbone’ of the prelude/swell division, making it feel bigger than it is. Its character contributes greatly to the fact that the small division of only 3 stops can offer a sufficiently powerful accompaniment to solo registrations from the great division (e.g. Trumpet 8 F!).
Quint 2 2/3 F and Octav 2 F - the former can be used in several ways and with great success! As a mixing stop it works brilliantly with 8‘ and 4’ , and as a solo stop it contributes an almost ‘luminous gentleness’. In my opinion, the reconstruction of Octav 2 F is one of the most important benefits of the restoration: it sounds indescribably beautiful and - not least in combination with Quint 2 2/3 F - provides a mild and quite effective crown of sound to illuminate the very fundamental sound from the other labial stops. And the reconstruction has also meant that it is once again possible to put together a principal choir whose individual voices have individuality, but still blend perfectly together!

Trumpet 8 F on the great - this is a reconstruction of the corresponding Köhne stop in Sakskøbing Church. It sounds with great fullness, character and drama, and thanks to a good ‘bottom’ in the bass, it works surprisingly well as a transmission in the pedal. The tonal reconstruction is successful, and you're never in doubt that Daniel Köhne had been in Paris with Aristide Cavaillé-Coll!
.....
The result of the restoration/reconstruction of Hornslet Church's organ is completely successful and approved without reservation. The organ has had a varied life, has been placed in several different locations and has finally come close to losing its tonal identity. Thanks to the recently completed project, the Köhne organ is once again a complete and distinctive instrument whose tonal integrity and possibilities offer almost ideal conditions for both liturgical and concert performances.
