11. June 2019The Vejleå organ is neither a compromise organ nor an attempt at stylistic imitation, but represents a desire to sublimate the special Danish “universal” organ sound, where the pursuit of elementary beauty and actual musical excellence is more important than “authenticity”. The dominant wood type of the console is ash, with pedal keys in white beech. The design is characterised by the desire for the greatest possible simplicity combined with equally great functionality. The registration is ‘double’ – mechanical, but with addition of slider magnets and electronic combinations. The instrument's external design is subordinate to the church's characteristic, austere architecture, which is the work of architect Wilhelm Wohlert. A completely traditional technical setup, which makes full use of the church's advantageous musical acoustics, has been possible.
The organ should also be viewed in connection with artist Peter Brandes' decoration of both the room and the organ. The organ cases are covered with silver leaf, which, in an ever-changing colour palette, reflects the changing light coming through the glass mosaic windows. In front of the entire organ section floats a 5-metre-high silver-plated mandorla – the victorious Christ. At the top of the facade's central field is a gilded cymbal star, in direct connection with eight bronze bells. (Excerpt from an article published in ‘Orglet’ by Svend Prip, organ consultant and former cathedral organist in Haderslev)
